New Ulm Recreation Center Expansion

The City of New Ulm engaged the RJM community team and JLG to update and expand their popular recreation center.

The $11.5 million project includes a state-of-the-art aquatics facility with Aquazip’n and Ninjacross systems, new fitness center addition, common areas, indoor multi-story playground, parking lot expansion, and stormwater filtration pond. The expansion project saw the rec center increase in size from 63,000 sf to 93,000 sf.

The facility had a phased opening to allow the community to make use of the new space as soon as possible, starting with the fitness center, then aquatics, and finally the gymnastics facility, which was converted from the previous aquatics space.

As quoted in a feature from New Ulm local station KEYC, Parks and Recreation Director Tom Schmitz says that this project is a part of “…a great history of recreation, parks, green space and fitness going back all the way to the founders of New Ulm into the 1850s.”

While the team experienced procurement delays due to supply chain disruption during COVID, these were resolved through continuous communication, alternate product selections, and flexibility in schedule sequencing.

The New Ulm Recreation Center Expansion has been recognized by MNOSHA as a CHASE Level 3 project.
